Hi there, I’m Tabitha Wong and this is my pitch. In Ontario, there are more than two million people over the age of sixty-five. With the advance of modern medicine, this number is only going to increase and it’s become incredibly important to take proper care of their mental health and to combat age segregation. After speaking with lifestyle directors at several retirement homes, I’ve identified that one of the most common problems that seniors face is loneliness. In fact, one in three seniors reports as feeling alone. While many of them are surrounded by people every day, seniors don’t often have the opportunity to sit one-on-one with someone and really connect with them. So here’s where I come in… I’ve created an organization called Perfect Pair. Perfect Pair is a non-profit that aims to foster positive relationships between senior citizens and high school students, that’s right, a connection that goes beyond generations. In a day and age where intergenerational friendships don’t often occur naturally, our goal is to not only improve the quality of life of senior citizens but also to fight against generational stereotypes. Our program works like this: “Pairs” will meet on a weekly basis to share and talk and occasionally attend outings and special events together. These events can include movie and shopping trips as well as parties and mixers. By incorporating Perfect Pair programs all throughout the province, the quality of life of senior citizens can improve by up to a projected seventy-five percent and students can receive the volunteer hours necessary for their graduation. New friends will be made as well as intergenerational bonds between communities. There’s nothing but benefits for both parties! As you can see from our website, seniors over the age of 65 and students in grades 10-12 are eligible to apply as mentors. A small fee of $50 is required to register in order to meet marketing, event, and subsidiary costs. Our organization is dedicated to doing meaningful work within our community and with your help, we can match grey hair with their perfect pair!
